Submission Guidelines
Thank you for considering submitting your work to WoW's NoW--Walking on Water's New Original Works! Our next round of consideration will take place at the beginning of 2024.
The purpose of WoW's NoW is to discover, explore, and celebrate new musicals for multigenerational audiences from writers across New York State with Tompkins County artists and audiences.
Although WoW's NoW is a new program launching in 2022, Walking on Water has been producing musical theatre since its formation in 2017. Please review WoW’s mission and vision and consider if your work might be a good fit for our community.
While WoW has produced shows with varying cast sizes over the years, our niche is producing chamber musicals; hence, a preference will be given to pieces with 12 characters or less (including the ensemble).

In order for a new musical to be eligible for WoW's NoW, it must be unpublished and not yet produced.
Should you choose to submit your musical for consideration, note that initially you will only be submitting your 20 strongest consecutive pages from the book of your musical. You will submit this along with a synopsis of the complete piece and a detailed cast/character breakdown; you should also include the corresponding sheet music from this excerpt, along with an mp3 demo of one of the songs from this excerpt.
Please save the written submission as a PDF file with no names of the writer(s) present on any of the pages--your submission will be anonymous when presented to the assigned reader from the WoW’s NoW panel.
Please begin with the title and a full synopsis on page 1, the cast/character breakdown on page 2, the excerpt from the book of your musical beginning on a new page, and the corresponding sheet music following the 20-page excerpt.
Please name your single PDF file “20-page submission_WoWs NoW_the title of your musical” and your corresponding mp3 file “WoWs NoW_the name of the song_the name of your musical”.
In addition to your submission, you will be asked to provide a cover letter, an artist statement, and a resume. If you are submitting as a team of two or more writers, you will submit a single cover letter and a single artist statement on behalf of the entire team. Each writer should include a separate resume within the same submission form. Please save each respective PDF file as follows:
Cover letter_WoWs NoW_your last name(s)
Resume_WoWs NoW_your last name
Artist Statement_WoWs NoW_your last name(s)
In your cover letter, please address the following items:
*How did you hear about WoW’s NoW?
*What made you decide to share your work with us?
*Why do you think your piece should be considered?
*If your piece is selected for the staged reading series, in what ways are you willing to engage with the director and music director throughout the workshop and rehearsal process?
*If your piece is selected as the audience favorite in the staged reading series, discuss your willingness and availability to continue to engage with the director and music director and provide re-writes/edits as agreed upon.
*Discuss your interest in and ability to engage with the director/music director in-person for any part of the workshop/rehearsal process hypothetically--for the staged reading and/or the world premiere.
In your Artistic Statement, please address the following items:
*What inspires your work as a writer?
*Describe your writing / composition style for music theatre.
If you are asked to submit your entire book and score of your musical after the first round of submissions are complete, please be prepared to send a completely anonymous document with no names of the writer(s) present on any of the pages.
Should your complete piece be accepted for the final round of consideration, you will be asked to participate in a Zoom interview with Artistic Director Priscilla Hummel.
Please note that all 20-page excerpt submissions are due NO LATER than 2/22/22.
Should the panel choose to move forward based on your initial submission, your complete piece will be due NO LATER than 3/22/22.
